Test the appearance of your greyscale photographs for any particular emulsion / toner combination by making digital approximations, or ‘nanchate’ prints of the final product.

note: nanchate (nan-cha-tay) is Japanese for imitation or fake

Make test Cyanotype prints or Van Dyke Brown prints with a Colorize Strategy, or use Duotones to make multi-tone tests such as Tea Toned Cyanotypes, or Blue Van Dyke prints.

  
         
the FILL LAYER STRATEGIES (for single-color emulsions)    
NANCHATE CYANOTYPE      
  Use the FILL LAYER technique to render the picture Cyan, then adjust the opacity in the Layers window (if necessary). It may help to add a little bit of magenta to make the color more blue.
 
open the layers window     window>layers   or   [F7]
create a new fill layer
  use layer>new fill layer>solid color…
  or pull down the new layer button to solid color…
 
       
 
the color picker will open  
mix the Prusssian Blue fill color
  set

Cyan to 71
  set

Magenta to 21
  set Yellow to 0
  set Black (K) to 0
 
   
   
 
return to the layers window
  set

blending mode to color
 
   
 
 
adjust the opacity (if desired)
 
       
     
NANCHATE VAN DYKE BROWN    
  Use the same FILL LAYER technique to render the picture Brown
open the layers window    
create a new fill layer     solid color…
  the color picker window will open
mix a color close to the dark brown of a Van Dyke Brown print
  set C = 63, M = 71, Y = 71, K = 83
return to the layers window
  set the blending mode to color
  adjust the opacity (if desired)
 
   
   
       
MULTIPLE ADJUSTMENT LAYERS      

Several adjustment fill layers can be made with various colors in one picture
They can then be turned on and off individually and printed		  
     
     
       
the DUOTONE STRATEGIES (for multi-process prints)    
TEA-TONED CYANOTYPE      
  Tea toning will add a yellowish highlight to a Cyanotype, and reduce the cyan blue to a navy blue.
The best way to achieve this color split is using Duotones.

load a preset of tritone colors and curves

set the first color

 to black
  adjust the curve to only appear in the shadows
set the midle color to a dark Prussian Blue of a Cyanotype print
           C=100, M=64, Y=19, K=3
  adjust the curve to appear in the midtones and shadows
set the third color to a soft Tea-Stain Yellow
           C=9, M=19, Y=78, K=0
  adjust the curve to appear mostly in the highlights
  subtle adjustments in the curves can make a big difference
  the color of the brightest highlight can be from almost white to a darker yellow
  the amount of overlap of the colors creates intermediate colors
  the amount of black in the shadows should be minimal, but…
re–edit with image> mode> duotone
 
       
BLUE VAN DYKE COMBO      
  Make a slightly out-of-register Van Dyke Brown print over a very over-exposed Cyanotype
to achieve this dual-emulsion effect.

set the mode to duotone     image> mode> duotone

set the midle color to an even darker Prussian Blue
           C=100, M=83, Y=21, K=9
  adjust the curve to appear in the shadows
set the third color to a redder Van Dyke Brown
           C=33, M=81, Y=81, K=53
  adjust the curve to appear in the midtones and highlights
  subtle adjustments in the curves can make a big difference
  the amount of overlap of the colors creates intermediate colors
  the amount of black in the shadows should be very minimal
re–edit with image> mode> duotone
